Westcoast IPCA Support Program (WISP)

Led by the IISAAK OLAM Foundation, IPCA Innovation Program, and T’Sou-ke First Nation, WISP is seeking to engage First Nations along the west coast of BC to support the establishment, governance and management of their Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) through mobilizing knowledge, building capacity, and strategic research.

Culturally Significant Species Dialogues

Since 2021, the IISAAK OLAM Foundation and the Assembly of First Nations’ Environment Sector have been working together to create a space for dialogue among First Nations to share knowledge and perspectives on Culturally Significant Species and Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs). In 2022 and 2023, dialogues specific to the Pacific region were hosted. Learnings from these dialogues have been share in numerous formats.

IPCA Innovation Program

The IPCA Innovation Program was established in August of 2021 to support Indigenous governments across Canada in their Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) aspirations through knowledge mobilization and capacity development tools.

The IPCA Innovation Program is a project of MakeWay Charitable Society’s shared platform, a national charity that builds partnerships and solutions to help nature and communities thrive together.

The work of the IPCA Innovation Program helps to create and scale up innovations that can support the development of diverse aspects of IPCAs.

Some of the projects currently housed at the IPCA Innovation Program include: The IPCA Knowledge Basket, IPCA Innovation Centres, Clayoquot Campus retreats, and the Westcoast IPCA Support Program.

The IISAAK OLAM Foundation (IOF) has been supporting the Assembly of First Nations’ Environment Sector on the coordination, design, and facilitation of a series of virtual dialogues focused on First Nations perspectives and approaches to species management and conservation planning. IOF has also been supporting the development of educational tools about IPCAs for First Nations audiences. The goal of this initiative is to advocate for First Nations voices and approaches to be communicated more clearly and influence Crown (federal) policies on species management.
